A Fabulous History of the Many Branches of one of Limerick's most Extraordinary Families by Grace O'Malley-Cantillon Kate Fleming O’Malley (1820-1901), was the tsunami in a gene pool that produced, in Ireland, government ministers Donogh, Des and Tim O’Malley; mayors of Limerick Dessie and Michael B. O’Malley; Limerick corporation members Patrick O’Malley and his son Charlie. In the wider world they included a communist in Franco’s Spain, several rubber planters in Malaya, an unlikely sheepshearer Swagman in New Zealand, and a branch in the United States. They became lawyers, doctors, writers, tramps, poets and priests. As a child, Grace was intrigued by the family lore about the matriarch Kate, who, from a small cottage in Madaboy, Murroe, managed to acquire and hold on to The Round House, a successful pub, grocery and spirit business in Limerick, thereby making the education of her large brood of twelve children possible.
